Specific Absorption Rate - What you need to know?

We know that cell phones emit radio frequency (RF) energy.

Specific Absorption Rate or SAR is a measure of the rate/amount of radio frequency energy absorbed by the body when using radiation-emitting products (i.e., when you are exposed to EMF or RF waves)

This is one of the specifications to note when you purchase a mobile or any other relevant electronic products. The SAR for mobile phones is generally in the range 0.5 - 1.6 but it is always better to check the SAR.

The limit in the United States by the FCC is at or below 1.6 watts per kilogram whereas as decided by European Union for mobile phones, and other such hand-held devices, the SAR limit is 2 watts per kilogram. Prescribed  SAR limit in India is 1.6 W/Kg averaged over one gram of human tissue.

Things to be aware of:

Though it is important to note the SAR, it doesn't stop there.

A cell phone with less SAR value isn't necessarily less harmful than one with higher SAR Value, though it is bound to.

It also depends on the usage conditions, network, and a lot of other factors.

The typical radiation absorbed by the body, in all usage conditions, is not taken into consideration while measuring the SAR value of the device as that is not practically possible.

SAR Value indicates the highest value at usage conditions. There also chances that the device will never be used under those circumstances.

Mobile devices constantly vary their power based on the coverage and other requirements for communications, so operation at maximum power might occur infrequently.

The point, here, is that though SAR Value is a notable feature of the device. There are a lot more efforts need to be taken to stay safe from radiation ill-effects. One of the most effective ways to stay safe is to keep your mobile away from your head and body as much as possible while in operation. You can use speakers while on a call, ear phone/headset or any other means.
